The Mompreneur: Kaye Sy Catral (mom to Alexa, 7 and Riley, 15 months)
Her Business: NappyCakes – It’s a Diaper Cake!
The Idea: I first saw diaper cakes on the TV series, Sex and the City. Then on a trip to the US in 2004, I saw an actual diaper cake in a store in Bellevue, WA. When I got back and had to attend a baby shower, I made one for my friend. My friends liked the idea and asked me to make cakes for them to give as gifts for baby showers, baptisms and birthdays.
On Her Inspiration: I want my cakes to look like actual edible cakes. As a mom, I want my diaper cakes to be quality products. When I make a cake, I think of my own kids and I keep in mind that a mom would want to receive items that are useful and not just pretty.
On Her Other Products: Apart from baby showers and baptisms, we also make unique giveaways for parties. One of our most popular giveaways is the LoveBloom, which are towel roses. With Mother’s Day around the corner, you might be interested in towel rose bouquets. Why give flowers that wilt? Our LoveBlooms last forever. J
On What Makes It Unique: NappyCakes is a gift company that makes use of functional items. I try to make sure that everything can be used and reused, such that nothing goes to waste. So my cakes, flowers, cupcakes, lollipops, and other products all make use of items that can be used again. I wouldn’t want anything less than the best for my own kids, so I want my customers to receive the same. Each one is made with “lotsa love!”

On Balancing Work With Family Time: I try to make sure that there is a balance to each day and that I get to spend quality and quantity time with my kids. That is why I am thankful that I have NappyCakes, so at least it’s work I can do at home. My daughter helps me with the cakes too. It’s our quality time together. We both love crafts!
Advice for Aspiring Mompreneurs: You have to find something you love to do, in order for any business to work. Find your passion. Don’t be afraid to try and make mistakes. My first NappyCake didn’t even quite resemble a cake! But I improved with each one I made. With God, all things are possible!
